Men don’t fancy smart women – unless they’re really attractive
Men aren’t interested in chasing overly intelligent women – but they’ll make it work if she’s really attractive.
As part of a new speed dating study, scientists from the Warsaw School of Economics, analysed the results from more than 4000 speed-dates.
It involved multiple rounds of quick-fire dating for the 560 men and women who agreed to take part.
Each of the participants – all of whom are students at Columbia University in New York City, United States – were then asked to rate their respective partners based on intelligence and general attractiveness.
According to the scientists’ findings, the women surveyed were most impressed by men who were either good-looking or intelligent. However men put much more of an emphasis on a woman’s physical appearance.
The study found that men were generally attracted to good looking women who were “relatively clever” however had a tendency to “draw a line in the sand” when it came to a woman’s intellect.
Researchers found that male daters believed that a woman with an extremely high intellect was subsequently an “economic bad”.
In other words, the men involved felt that the smarter a woman was, the more attractive she was required to be – in a bid to even out the ‘hot-smart’ ratio.
The study, published in the journal of Personality and Individual Differences, noted that: “While seeking partners, women do not exclude men who are perceived as less physically attractive. Even those men who are not perceived by women as physically attractive may receive positive speed-dating decisions, if only those men seem intelligent.
“Males demonstrate a clearly different approach to mate selection,” the study read.
“In men’s perception, for relatively high values of women’s perceived intelligence, this personal trait turns out to be an economic bad.”
